State to Hold Veterans' Campus Outreach Event at UW-Milwaukee
(MADISON) - The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will
co-host an outreach event, including a Question & Answer (Q & A) Session, on the UW-Milwaukee campus on May 7, 2008 to provide information and assistance with federal and state veterans education
and other benefits, programs and services.
"I look forward to talking with student veterans and others and holding a listening session with
them," said Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary John A. Scocos. "It's important to hear their input while at the same time giving them information they need to apply for
and use their benefits." The on-campus Veterans' Benefits Open House will be held on Wednesday, May 7 at UW-Milwaukee in the Student Union, Room 240. Light meal fare from the UW food
service will be provided.
The session will start at 4 p.m. when Secretary Scocos will meet with veterans for a short
presentation. Following the Q & A, until about 7 p.m., there will be an open house for veterans to meet with WDVA staff and school officials to discuss federal and state programs, including
education programs, and receive assistance in applying. The Milwaukee County Veterans Service Officer will be on hand, along with representatives from the Wisconsin National Guard Family Resources
Center, and health care staff from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Current and prospective student veterans and veterans from the surrounding areas are encouraged to attend.
Since February, on-campus Veterans' Benefits Open House events have been held at UW-Platteville,
Southwest Technical College in Fennimore, Northcentral Technical College in Wausau, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Green Bay. Future events are planned for UW-Eau Claire and other locations in the fall.

New Database of Approved Schools on WDVA's Website
The department website has a new searchable database entitled, Montgomery GI Bill in Wisconsin, Approved
Programs and Schools - https://services.dva.state.wi.us/wisaaschool/.
The database identified above is maintained by WDVA's State Approving Agency (SAA) and includes post
-secondary, private and public, and in-state schools and programs that qualify for federal Montgomery GI Bill
(MGIB) benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The database can be searched by program,
school or Wisconsin city. The database offers campus-specific information, such as campus veterans' coordinators, which can assist in deciding where to move or at which school to study.
The website contains links to the federal VA and to the Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards of the Wisconsin
Department of Workforce Development. Eligible persons can use the MGIB to supplement income while participating in On-the-Job Training (OJT) or apprenticeship programs.
This bulletin pertains to the Federal Montgomery GI Bill. Information on the Wisconsin GI Bill can be found at

VA Increases Travel Reimbursement for Eligible Veterans
Peake: Disabled Veterans Earned Increase
WASHINGTON – Over a million eligible veterans will see their mileage reimbursement more than double starting
tomorrow, for travel to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities.
"This increase helps veterans -- especially those living in rural areas -- offset some of the gasoline costs as they
travel to VA's world-class health care," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr. James B. Peake. "Increasing the
mileage reimbursement is one more step by VA to help veterans access the health care they deserve."
The 2008 appropriations act provided funding for VA to increase the beneficiary travel mileage reimbursement
rate from 11 cents per mile to 28.5 cents per mile. The increase goes into effect on Feb. 1.
After little more then a month on the job, Secretary Peake used his authority to establish the first increase in the
mileage reimbursement in 30 years, fulfilling a pledge he made during his Senate confirmation hearing last month.
While increasing the payment, VA, as mandated by law, also equally increased the deductible amounts applied to
certain mileage reimbursements. The new deductibles are $7.77 for a one way trip, $15.54 for a round trip, with
a maximum of $46.62 per calendar month. However, these deductibles can be waived if they cause a financial hardship to the veteran.
